This may be a daft question, but I thought I'd ask it anyway.
A long term friend of my family used to have white sideburns and brown hair, he said they were white because someone treated them for too long with Peroxide.
Would this really work?
I'm thinking it would be much easier to hide beard shadow if the hair was growing white.
As most of us work clean shaved I don't see white beard as a problem, it wouldn't be for me anyway.
Anyone know anything about this?
Would it work?

When I was in High School and a dumb teenager I used hydrogen peroxide to bleach my brown hair so that I would look like a surfer.I ended up with a mixture of light brown and blond hair.I think it would help achieve blond beard but don't know how the peroxide would be after a shave to bleach the stubble. It took many applications to get blond hair the way I did.

I'm thinking long term use might be bad for the skin. I heard of someone bleaching their face as well. Peroxide leaves a white residue. That can't be so good on the pores for repeated exposure. Just my opinion...;)

I personally think long term use will not be good for the skin as it has a drying effect, there are products formulated for the task but again I wouldn't use them as a routine.
This product has been withdrawn for some reason.

All info taken from 2006 BNF (British National Formulary)
Hydrogen Peroxide
Cautions: Large or deep wounds; avoid on healthy skin and eyes; bleaches fabric; incompatible with products containing iodine or potassium permanganate
Uses: For skin disinfection. Particularly cleansing and deodorising wounds and ulcers, superficial bacterial skin infections.
The BNF is a great book and is not just some thing you can get in your local book store. It is like the doctors hand book tell them what to prescribe.
If you need to know any more about UK prescribe drugs drop me a line.

Peroxide might be too harsh. The girls I knew didn't even use this to bleach their hair. They used(and I did as well) some stuff called "Ultra Blue" by Clairol. Peroxide sounds like something used in the 1950's, I don't know anyone who uses it. I don't know how to use "Ultra Blue" on beard hair. Actually I don't even know if "Ultra Blue" is still around.

When I was a kid I used a product ... I believe the brand name was Marchiand's peroxide. It was specifically for bleaching hair, I used it for the surfer look and it worked quite well. My mom still has pics of me from when I was like 14 with the front of my hair all bleached!!
I think Hydrogen Peroxide isn't at all the same thing? I don't even know if Marchiand's peroxide is still available.

It does work on arm hair and will lighten them but belive me is does not work on facial hair at all. They have come out with some new lazor razors one by epilator about 100.00 + dollars and a better one thats about 400.00 and does say that with in 10 weeks of treatment it does stop the beard growth

I am not advocating it's use I am questioning whether it would work.
As for skin burns and the like, my Farther used to brush his teeth with the stuff to whiten them!
What I have found hard to believe is that Sid's sideburns were always white and he swore he never touched them again.
Could all the melanin be removed from the root in a follicle?
I do find this one hard to believe, but would like to know one way or the other!

I used it once at a time to brush my teeh. I would not reccommend it. It turned my gums white, and shrank them back from the teeth, and felt very wierd! ---After about half a day, they came back to normal. ----No, dont mess with this stuff.

The peroxide would only bleach the hair it came into contact with...once that hair grew out the rest of the hair would be the normal colour...
The stuff I use to bleach my hair contains peroxide, so that my medium brown hair goes blonde. it makes the purple really stand out, which it wouldn't do over the brown...In my previous avatar you could probably see the regrowth, not sure about this one till I look at it again...
I used a mouthwash that contained peroxide but only in a small amount. Pure peroxide is pretty strong stuff. My hair color has peroxide in it, but once again in a small amount.
I personally wouldn't use straight peroxide on my hair, teeth or anything else. Ever dip your fingers in it and watch them turn white??? :bug: Hmmm......

I have never used the stuff personally, and won't unless I know what it really can do.
I believe the stuff my farther used was a diluted form bought from the chemists over the counter.
I understand the usual hair lightening products, I have been using them for years.
Thanks for all the input!

I would so not mess with this stuff, based on what I've read in this forum.
