The monsters themselves aren't that bad. It was the bad costumes that made me shiver lol ;)

The BBC weren't rich back then, they had to make the costumes out of cardboard, double sided sticky tape, tin foil and a pair of Val's old knickers.

It was mandatory!

Blue Peter had to follow the same rules, and share the materials!

I do wonder what our transatlantic cousins make of the UK sisters enthusiasm for Dr Who! (Having said that, there is no way I am going to miss the opening episode of the new series!)

caroline i have been a big doctor who fan for a long time now, as i am also a big fan of a lot of other british shows which we see over here In canada. A lot of that properly has to do with the fact that i orignally come from Manchester and been here now for nearly 29 years.

Well I know at least one of our transatlantic cousins here who will no sooner it has aired here will be searching for a streaming site to download the programme, she is a Dr Who nut and can't wait for the BBC channel to air it over in the states. She doesn't allow me to give her a synopsis of the programme either as it will spoil her viewing. :)

The newer series have all the 'whizz- bangs' and special effects that weren't possible in the older ones, but I still like the earlier series more. There was a certain 'kitsch-iness' about them, and the title sound track was really haunting. I hope when the new series is shown here, that it won't be at the ridiculous time of 7.20 p.m. again!

Tristen is gonna be soooo HAPPY!!! Here in the states we have to wait but I am lucky enough to have BBC on satellite:D

Michelle, the thing with Rose was sorta complicated. Basically she got left behind in a different time with her Mom AND Dad. If I say anymore I'll be in big Trouble:eek:

Michelle, Rose went back to her family, in an alter world where her dad's still alive. I didn't see the Christmas episode though I have tried finding the download.

I usually can burn it after it has aired in the UK, cause we have to pay for BBC here if we want it. Or wait for reruns later on the sci-fi channel(They finally got a clue)

It's a really old show that is making it's way back. I personally never cared for it. But that is my personal taste.

FWIW, there was always a huge following of Doctor Who here in the states! I remember the first episode I saw, it was Ark in Space and I must have been about 10. I had such a crush on Elizabeth Sladen (Sarah Jane Smith), that is until Lela ran next... then Romana... seemed the sidekicks just kept getting better. Doctor Who ran on public television, so we always got to watch it commercial free...

They still run Doctor Who on the SciFi channel on cable, but somehow its never caught up... and I miss the old days of watching on Sunday nights. By the way, for you UK folks, thats also how we got introduced to Dave Allen, The Two Ronnies, All Creatures Great and Small (I think that was Peter Davidson), Blakes 7, The Prisoner, etc. You'd be surprised how much BBC television affected those here in the states...

...and of course Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy. Read all 5 books of the trilogy :D

Oh, and as far as campy props, no matter how much CGI has advanced the art of special effects, you just cant beat a dalek with a toilet plunger for an arm... :p

Let's face it though, Star Trek did the same thing, sometimes just as bad in the ole days. Thankfully things have changed? Maybe not the mannequins butt.....:p

I can still remember the first series in the U.K ,nearly 45 years ago just as I got in from school. My younger brother used to watch from behind the sofa because of the scary bits and we just threw his 50th birthday party and he's still a big fan !! Even my daughter loves it.
Lol,

Yes! Doctor Who can be boring. I have just started re-watching what's available of the 1st Doctor, and the next episode is The Gunfighters; which I recall as a real sleeping powder.
From time to time, they did make a genuine attempt. With Tom Baker, they tried taking it out of the studio and on location; Paris, Amsterdam, etc. Even if the production values were sometimes less than desirable, the concept was always enthralling. The past three seasons have been magnificent for the most part. I think one thing they have missed is that the TARDIS is more than a control room. The Eye of the Tardis, at one time, was in a separate room. There was even a swimming pool.
Another thing they may have missed out on is that, as the Sylvester McCoy series ended, it was becoming clear that the Doctor was something more than a slightly bewildered exile. I don't think you become President of the Council of Time Lords by being incompetent. I have always suspected that the Doctor is Rasillon in a new set of lives.
As to being the last of the Time Lords, surely there are other exiles. Romana is still in that other dimension. Susan Foreman is only slightly in the future. There is hope for a New Gallifrey.

I suppose we could retrieve Romana from E-Space, although Adric can stay there! :D

What I loved most about Tom Baker was his wry sense of humor... I still remember when he returned to Skaros, opened the view screen to a cliff wall and said:

"Oh look! Rocks!"

I think he would have made a far better (and more entertaining) president or PM than those currently in power...

Uhm Adric didn't stay in espace, unfortunately he died, probably the sadest episode of the eighties.

I still can't believe they lost so much of Patrick's shows yet aren't missing any of William's? Weird..

Tom Baker was the most standoffish in my opinion. He didn't take any ****!

There's a bunch of goodies at this site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/video/

Mea culpa, I guess my aged memory is not what it used to be... if I recall, I think Adric died in a Peter Davidson episode saving them from the Cybermen? Now I am not so sure... :o

Would you believe I have every episode on VHS from Doctors 1 - 6? I dont even own a VCR anymore, what with recordable DVDs and and DVRs. :p

I also still have a copy of John Pertwee's "Moon Boots and Dinner Suits" somewhere...

Something like that :) I used to have all of Jon's stuff way back when, they seem to have been lost in the sands of time. Don't know of any other series with such history. Proof that if you keep at it, great things will come. Or.. you'll get exterminated :D

still not sure when the new season starts here, More then likely when the NHL playoffs are over as it is on the same network as them, or they might do what they did with coronation street and make it available online while the playoffs are on. I watched all this weeks episodes yesterday afternoon before i went out to my mum's without any adverts what a pleasure that was.

Anyhow any corrie fans here in canada you can watch online here.

http://www.cbc.ca/coronation/

as far as i know this is for canada only and not sure if you can get it anywhere else you have to try and see.

No promises I have a couple things to do. Didn't you put the computer in near the TV? More important, don't you have a laptop? I'll make an effort to be around to watch here. Just no telling what I could have forgotten that needs doing tomorrow. I'll just download it like I did last Sunday.

If anyone wants a streaming link let me know. Never wait and never pay for things you don't need to ;)

Wish that included taxes and beer..!!!!!

Those of us in the UK should be ok as the aforementioned iPlayer (BBC) should have most things backed up online for viewing later. They do self delete though if you forget and we know what some peoples memories are like..... :D
